シカゴはアメリカ合衆国イリノイ州北東部、ミシガン湖畔に位置する人口２７１万人で、ニューヨーク８５０万、ロス３８０万に次ぐ全米３位の大都市。グレーターシカゴの人口は９５０万人で、日本の大阪市２７０万、大阪府８７０万人数クラスです。シカゴ市と大阪市は姉妹都市提携をしています。（大阪市はサンフランシスコとも姉妹都市提携していましたが、慰安婦像の設置問題で６０年の提携が解消されました。）
街中のミレニアムパークには、クラウド・ゲート（Cloud Gate） という巨大な屋外彫刻作品があり、ビーンの愛称で親しまれています。
摩天楼発祥の地ともいわれ、有名ビルとしては以下があります。
ウィリスタワー: ５２７．３mで、かつて高さ世界一でした。ジョンハンコックセンター: 展望台３６０ CHICAGOが有名。ホーム・インシュアランス・ビル: １８８４年建設１９３１年解体。１０階建てだが鉄骨構造であったことから、世界初の高層ビルと言われます。トリビューン・タワー: 万里の長城、ピラミッド、パルテノン神殿など、世界中の歴史的建造物の石が実際に外壁に使われています。その他とうもろこしのようなツインタワーのマリーナシティ、波打つ外観のアクアタワー、トランプタワーもあります。ミュージカル「シカゴ」の舞台で、ブルースの聖地ともいわれます。ダークナイトのゴッサムシティのイメージとされ、トランスフォーマーダークサイドムーンで壊され、ホーム・アローンなど有名映画のロケ地になっています。印象派コレクションが有名な世界最大級のシカゴ美術館もあります。シカゴピザと呼ばれる深皿ピザ（ディープディッシュ）の発祥地でもあります。街の中を流れるシカゴ川は、以前水質悪化し、衛生改善のため人工的に流れの向きを逆にされました。
スポーツチームは、アメフトのシカゴベアーズ、アイスホッケーのシカゴ・ブラックホークス、サッカーのシカゴ・ファイアFC、バスケットではマイケル・ジョーダンが率いたシカゴブルズがあります。野球チームは、鈴木 誠也のいたカブス、井口資仁 • 高津臣吾 • 福留孝介のいたホワイトソックスがあります。２０２６年から村上宗隆がホワイトソックスに加入します。１９２０年代、禁酒法時代のシカゴで密造酒・賭博・売春を支配し、税務署に捕まってアルカトラズに収監されたアル・カポネは、シカゴ=ギャング都市をイメージづけたそうです。ケビンコスナー、ロバートデニーロの出演した映画アンタッチャブルも悪名拡散に一役かっていそうです。現在もシカゴ南部は、治安が悪いステレオタイプに使われるのを聞いたことがあります。観光客は行くな、と地元の人に言われたこともあります。実際はハイドパークなど、治安が悪くない地域もシカゴ南部にはあります。
Chicago is located in the northeastern part of Illinois in the United States, along the shores of Lake Michigan. With a population of about 2.71 million, it is the third-largest city in the U.S., following New York City (8.5 million) and Los Angeles (3.8 million).The population of Greater Chicago is approximately 9.5 million, which is comparable to Osaka City (2.7 million) and Osaka Prefecture (8.7 million) in Japan. Chicago and Osaka are sister cities. (Osaka City also had a sister-city relationship with San Francisco, but that 60-year partnership was dissolved due to the controversy over the installation of a comfort women statue.)
In downtown Millennium Park, there is a massive outdoor sculpture called Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean.” Chicago is often called the birthplace of skyscrapers. Famous buildings include:• Willis Tower: 527.3 meters tall and once the tallest building in the world.• John Hancock Center: Known for its observation deck, 360 CHICAGO.• Home Insurance Building: Built in 1884 and demolished in 1931. Although only ten stories tall, it is considered the world’s first skyscraper because of its steel-frame structure.• Tribune Tower: Stones from historic landmarks around the world—such as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, and the Parthenon—are embedded in its exterior walls. Other notable buildings include Marina City, the corn-shaped twin towers; the wave-like Aqua Tower; and Trump Tower. Chicago is the setting of the musical “Chicago” and is also known as a holy land of blues music. It served as the model for Gotham City in The Dark Knight, was heavily destroyed in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and has been used as a filming location for famous movies such as Home Alone. The Art Institute of Chicago, one of the largest art museums in the world, is especially famous for its Impressionist collection. Chicago is also the birthplace of deep-dish pizza, often called Chicago pizza. The Chicago River, which flows through the city, once suffered from severe pollution.
As for sports teams, Chicago is home to the Chicago Bears (NFL), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Chicago Fire FC (MLS), and the Chicago Bulls, famously led by Michael Jordan in the NBA. In baseball, the city has the Chicago Cubs, for whom Seiya Suzuki played, and the Chicago White Sox, which previously featured Tadahito Iguchi, Shingo Takatsu, and Kosuke Fukudome. Munetaka Murakami is scheduled to join the White Sox starting in 2026.In the 1920s, during the Prohibition era, Al Capone dominated bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution in Chicago. He was ultimately arrested for tax evasion and imprisoned at Alcatraz, helping to cement Chicago’s image as a “gangster city.” The film The Untouchables, starring Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro, also contributed to this notorious reputation. Even today, Chicago’s South Side is sometimes stereotyped as dangerous. I have heard locals warn tourists not to go there. In reality, however, there are also not dangerous neighborhoods such as Hyde Park in the southern part of the city.
